Star Anise Herbal Tea — Anís — is an infusion of the dried star-shaped pods of Illicium verum, prized in Cuban and Latin American kitchens for its warm licorice aroma and the gentle ease it brings after a heavy meal. The cup pours pale amber with a sweet, spiced finish that needs no sugar.

How to Brew

Steep one bag in 8 oz of water at 200–212°F for 5 to 7 minutes. Cover the cup while steeping to hold the aromatic oils. For a stronger infusion, extend to 10 minutes — anís does not turn bitter the way black teas do.

When to Drink

After dinner, late evening, or anytime you want something warm and settling. The natural sweetness makes it a caffeine-free alternative to dessert, and it pairs well with a small piece of dark chocolate or a slice of pan dulce.

It also blends easily with cinnamon stick or a strip of orange peel for a Cuban-style agua aromática.

Traditional Use

Across Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and much of Latin America, té de anís is the go-to after big family meals — lechón, arroz con frijoles, ropa vieja. Abuelas brew it for upset stomachs, colicky babies (as a weak infusion), and quiet conversations at the kitchen table. In Spain it is folded into resolí liqueurs; in Vietnam and southern China the same pod flavors pho and braises.

10 individually wrapped bags, $0.27 each.
